Bukit Barisan Selatan

work-bbsBukit Barisan Selatan National Park Located on the southern tip of Sumatra, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) is the third largest national park on Sumatra and contains more lowland forest than any other protected area on the island. WCS field surveys and on-going monitoring have revealed the importance of BBSNP to the conservation of tigers, rhinos, tapirs, elephants, primates, and hornbills.

The Way Canguk Research Station is used as a staging area for developing research methodologies and training staff in them. The research strategies are then applied throughout BBSNP and also throughout the BBS landscape. Park borders are meaningless for wide-ranging animals like the Sumatran tigers or Sumatran elephants, species that travel across boundaries in search of the resources they require. Thus, saving their remaining populations means maintaining their habitats throughout the landscape, inside and outside of the park’s boundaries. WCS addresses the need for conservation planning in and around BBSNP by working with local people living nea  the park, local NGOs, and regional government.
