The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, works
in over 60 countries to save wildlife. The goal of the Wildlife Conservation Society – Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) is to conserve Indonesia’s wildlife populations and their habitats.
WCS-IP is seeking two Project Managers to oversee the implementation and development of two large, long-term projects in Sumatra. One position will be based in North Sumatra or Aceh working for the ‘Green PNPM’ Project and the other will be based in Bengkulu working for the ‘Carbon and Climate Change Project’.
DUTIES
1. The Project Manager for Green PNPM Project will:
- Lead the implementation of the WCS Green PNPM project within the province of Aceh, based jointly between Bandar Aceh and Medan. Operating under the supervision of the WCS Green PNPM Coordinator.
- Develop and maintain good relationships and coordination with government counterparts to the Green PNPM project at Provincial, Kabupaten and Kecamatan levels.
- Ensure that WCS activities within the PNPM project are implemented in line with the existing PNPM cycle, and coordinated with project activities in other provinces of Sumatra.
- Identify, utilize and manage local NGO partners as part of the project implementation. Manage and supervise local NGO sub-grants at the kabupaten levels, under coordination with Program Coordinator.
- Supervise project staff and budgets allocated to the project. .
- Contribute to the overall development and implementation of the Green PNPM project and to WCS’s objectives in Indonesia.
2. The Project Manager for Carbon and Climate Change Project will:
- Support the development of a long-term approach to forest management at the regional level based on sound management of existing forests and the creation of new forestry and agro-forestry schemes.
- Establish excellent working relationships with local government, forestry department, universities, local NGOs and other stakeholders. Work with these stakeholders to identify innovative solutions to current and emerging threats to biodiversity in the region.
- Identify, utilize and manage local NGO partners as part of the project implementation. Manage and supervise local NGO sub-grants.
- Supervise project staff and budgets allocated to the project. .
- Contribute to the overall development and implementation of the Carbon and Climate Change Project and to WCS’s objectives in Indonesia.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidates for both positions will demonstrate the following qualifications:
- At least five years successful experience of project management in the conservation, forestry or development sector.
- Excellent leadership skills and a proven ability to work unsupervised and to demonstrate initiative and decision making skills.
- Proven experience of personnel and budget management.
- Strong and confident negotiating skills, and demonstrated experience of liaising with a range of stakeholders, including local government.
- Experience of working with multilateral, bilateral and corporate donors is highly desirable..
- Excellent interpersonal skills and sensitivity to an advisory role in dealing with partner organizations.
- Proven ability to motivate and lead others to achievement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in Indonesian and English.\
- Willingness to travel frequently and on short notice, often to remote areas.
- Familiar with MS Office and other supporting computer programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to conservation and the goals of WCS.
In addition:
The Project Manager for Green PNPM Project will demonstrate the following qualifications:
- A proven track record of working with local NGOs
- A basic understanding of sub-granting and sub-contracting arrangements
- A knowledge of rural development and natural resource management issues and initiatives in Indonesia.
- An understanding of natural resource management and rural development issues prevailing in Aceh.
The Project Manager for Carbon and Climate Change Project will demonstrate the following qualifications:
- An understanding of forest governance and forest governance law in Indonesia
- A knowledge of commercial forestry practice, including sustainable forest management and agro-forestry.
- Knowledge of business management and law, and/or public sector finance is highly desirable.
- A basic understanding of carbon markets would be beneficial.
- An entrepreneurial spirit!
