Way Kambas
Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) is the second most important site for Sumatran elephant conservation. WKNP contains at least 35 mammal species and over 300 bird species, and contains one of the largest swamp forests in Sumatra. WCS is working with partners to reduce human-elephant conflicts and the illegal capture of elephants. We have trained a large number of farmers, guards, and NGO members in humanelephant conflict (HEC) assessment and resolution through Crop Protection Units. We also continue to work with partners and communities to devise innovative ways to curb HEC including an insurance policy against crop damage, and active deterrence of elephant crop raiding through watchtowers manned by farmers.
