An adult female tiger was captured by villagers in Desa Jamboo Apha, Tapaktuan, South Aceh at 21 October 2009. The tiger was found in suffer and injured by snare in front right leg and left right leg. Villager with tiger mahout then brought tiger to Resort Aceh Selatan, BKSDA NAD. Based on villager’s info during investigation after the tiger dead (30 October-1 November), the tiger attacked and killed 3 goats and 4 chickens. WRU predicted that tiger trapped by snare then escaped after broken the sling. The snare then wounded tiger for couple days. This situation made the tiger tried to found ‘easy’ prey such goat or chicken.
WRU was contacted BKSDA NAD to recovered the tiger. Drh. Kholis with Vet from Syah Kuala University tried to save tiger. But the tiger condition was dyin
g by acute infection in legs and dehydration. After 3 days recovered, the tiger finally dead. During 4 months (July-October 2009), 3 tigers trapped by snares; 1 tiger alive (front right leg was amputated) and 2 tigers dead in South Aceh. This phenomena show that snare (especially wild pig snare) is very dangerous for tiger and need urgent action for government and partner to solve this problem. Avoid wild pig snare installation in entire tiger habitat will reduce risk of tiger dead by snare. The tiger carcass was burned in BKSDA office, but the skin still keep in the office.(dna)
