Good news!Villager in Talang 11 reported that female tiger in their surrounding villager already born1 cub. Some vilager also seen the tigers in coffee plantation and main road near palm oil trees. They saw tiger eaten wild pig and bring her cub at Sunday afternoon (August 29, 2009). This tiger is the same individual which is live in Talang 11 and trapped by WCS camera in May 2008.
Another good news, 27 goats also born in Talang 11. These goats as result from cross breeding between Ibu Yani goats (3 goats) with villager goats. During 1 year, 27 goats from 10 owners have been born. Pak Latif, Dulhadi, Ra’in, Nurman, Saleh, Suryafi, Jumaroh, Embis, Suhandan, and Dadang are the owners of goats.
Talang 11 is WRU (Wildlife Response Unit) pilot project to show that human and wildlife can live together without disturb each other. Between year 2000-2004, livestock in Talang 11 disturbed and attacked by tiger. More than 10 goats killed by tiger in their cages. WRU identified some aspects why tiger disturb this village; Livestock is easy prey for tiger to attacked. Without fully protection, goats will be easy to kill by tiger. Cage for goat is crucial problem. Install good cage with strong design is a key to solve this problem. However, WRU made TPE (Tiger Proof Enclosure) to avoid tiger attack. So far, more than 60 cages already installed in Talang 11 and Ujung Rembun. This cages is very effective, 100% reduced tiger attack!
Wild pig is abundance in Talang 11. Villager often install snares to trapped wild pig and avoid their livestock from tiger attack. They argue that wild pig is as a pest for their crop, and lot of livestock killed. Snare kill the tiger. Snares will reduce wild pig and then tiger will try to find another prey, include livestock. However, WRU carried out villager consultative meetings as an effort to increasing people understanding about links of tiger and prey in their surrounding village.
Fortunatelly, everything getting good progress. Livestock save by TPE (Tiger Proof Enclosure), wild pig abundance, and the tiger live safe and give new cub.(dna)
