Partnership

The future of Indnesia’s wildlife and wild lands depend on mutual cooperation between a number of stakeholders. Through partnerships with groups that possess other interests and skills, WCS aims to expand the scope and breadth of the conservation impacts through our activities.

CANOPI (Conservation Action Network Program, Indonesia)

Over the next five years, WCS and our partners will build a lasting foundation for the conservation of Bukit Barisan’s lowland forest ecosystem. With seven years of investment in conservation research, community outreach, and training, WCS is poised to take conservation to a new level not only in the national park, but across the landscape. WCS has helped form a conservation coalition, CANOPI, with a number of local and national partners to conserve the Bukit Barisan Landscape.

CANOPI aims to build local capacity, carry out sound research and monitoring, give input to management of parks and natural resources, help shape local economic development to accommodate conservation needs, and increase awareness of biodiversity and conservation – all through a partnership framework. In doing so, CANOPI will empower local conservation groups to contribute directly to protection of threatened ecosystem.

Advocacy Network for Tiger, Rhino and Elephant

The Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhino, and Sumatran elephant, subject to heavy hunting pressure, are species that are facing the possibility of extinction in the wild. In 2001, a number of groups interested in the conservation of these species formed a coalition called the Tiger Rhinos Elephant Advocacy Network (TREAN) to highlight the need to strengthen law enforcement institute government policies that promote their conservation, and heighten awareness among the public. WCS was one of the founding members, and continues to serve on the Board.
