WRU Trained FKL and PJOK about Human-Tiger Conflict Mitigation Tecniques

Wildlife Response Unit (WRU) was trained FKL (Kecamatan Environmental Facilitator) and PJOK (Responsible Activities Sub-District) about human-tiger conflict tecniques in Padang, West Sumatra.

In Sumatra, one of Green PNPM output is encouraging villagers to mitigate human-tiger conflict since the conflict is become big issue in Sumatra.

Together with WRU, Green PNPM try to increasing PJOK and FKL skill about human-tiger conflict tecniques. Two WRU staff and 1staff from Green PNPM trained them about how to live safe with tiger, how to detect tiger presence on their village, and how to mitigate conflict. Trainer also introduced TPE (Tiger Proof Enclosure) design to reduce livestock attacked by tiger.

On discussion session, trainer explained about how dangerous to keep dog in tiger conflict area. Tiger tend to attack dog and not human, even they keep in safety place. However, trainer advised villagers to keep dog outside the settlement. Participants on this training also interest about enclosure design. They asked about the effectiveness of enclosure and cost to build it. During 4 years, WRU already built hundreds of enclosures in Lampung, Bengkulu, and Aceh province.

Trainer also introduced sirene, home made bamboo/PVC canon, and firecracker to mitigate tiger. WRU have experience to trained more than 100 villagers in Lampung to made and used canon, firecrackers as a preventive tools to avoid tiger enter their settlment and killed livestock.

WRU will extend hotline number covered area into 4 provinces under PNPM project. PJOK and FKl will working on the ground to assist villagers to write proposal, do what they need in their village; for example human-tiger conflict mitigation, and then trying to implement conflict mitigation and avoidance.
